I used to think “training a cat” was a joke. Dogs fetch, cats judge โ that was my philosophy. Then I tried clicker training with Didi, and wow, I was so wrong. Cats LOVE learning when you make it fun. They’re not being stubborn โ they just need the right motivation. Spoiler: it’s treats. ๐ฑ
Here’s how I started. Got a clicker from Amazon for like $5. First step is “charging the clicker” โ just click, then give a treat. Do this like 20 times until Didi looks at you when he hears the click, expecting food. Took us about 2 evenings.
Then we moved to “touch.” I held out my hand, and every time Didi touched his nose to it, click + treat. He figured it out in maybe 5 minutes. I was genuinely shocked. From there, we built up to high-five, sit, and even spin around. ๐
Key tip: keep sessions SHORT. 3-5 minutes max. Cats have tiny attention spans. I do it right before dinner when Didi is hungry and motivated. Never force it โ if he walks away, that’s the session over. No pressure.
The best part? Training builds trust. Didi is more confident, more communicative, and our bond is way stronger. He comes running when he sees the clicker now. That little “click” sound means good things are happening.
So if you think your cat is “untrainable” โ try it. Start with something simple like “sit.” Your cat is smarter than you think. Didi definitely is. He just pretends not to hear me sometimes. Classic cat move. ๐ธ
