Last week Didi knocked my water glass off the nightstand at 3 AM. It crashed, water went everywhere, and he sat there looking at me like I was the problem. Sound familiar? ?
\n\n\n\nCats don’t push things off tables to spite you. I know it feels personal, but it’s actually one of the most normal cat behaviors out there. Here’s what’s really going on.
\n\n\n\nIt’s a hunting instinct, not revenge
\n\n\n\nThat little pencil sitting on the edge of your desk? To your cat, it looks exactly like a mouse or a bug. They bat it once to see if it moves. If it doesn’t, they bat it harder. If it still doesn’t, they push it off the edge to make sure it’s really dead.
\n\n\n\nDidi does this with pens, hair ties, and one unfortunate succulent. Every single day. ??
\n\n\n\nSometimes they want your attention
\n\n\n\nIf you ignore your cat all day and then suddenly react when they knock something over Γ―ΒΏΒ½ congratulations, you’ve just taught them the fastest way to get your attention.
\n\n\n\nIt took me a while to realize Didi was doing this on purpose. The second I jumped up yelling, he’d get pets and play time. Of course he kept doing it.
\n\n\n\nHow to actually stop it
\n\n\n\nA few things that helped in my house:
\n\n\n\n- \n
- Put valuables and drinks in spots your cat can’t reach. Easier than fighting nature. \n
- Use museum putty or sticky tabs to keep small items anchored to shelves. \n
- Give them a steady rotation of toys they can bat around legally. Crinkle balls and spring toys work great. \n
- Play with them more during the day. A tired cat is a chill cat. \n
And honestly? Sometimes you just have to accept that you live with a tiny chaos agent who thinks pens are prey. ?
