I still remember the first time Didi sank his teeth into my hand. I was wiggling my fingers under the blanket thinking it was hilarious until I looked down and saw actual teeth marks. ? Ouch.
\n\n\n\nIf your cat bites during play, you’re definitely not alone. It’s one of the most common behavior issues cat owners deal with, and the good news is it’s fixable.
\n\n\n\nFirst, figure out why your cat is biting
\n\n\n\nPlay biting and aggressive biting are two different things. Play biting is gentle, comes with relaxed body language, and your cat usually stops when you stop moving. Aggressive biting is harder, comes with flattened ears and a puffed tail, and feels very different.
\n\n\n\nDidi does the play-bite thing every time we use his feather wand. He gets so hyped up he forgets his own strength.
\n\n\n\nStop using your hands and feet as toys
\n\n\n\nI know it’s tempting. Kittens are tiny and your fingers look fun. But if you teach your cat that hands are toys, they grow up thinking it’s okay to chomp on you. Didi learned this the hard way as a kitten, and unlearning it took months.
\n\n\n\nSwitch to a real wand toy, kicker toy, or crinkle ball instead. Your fingers will thank you. ?
\n\n\n\nFreeze when the bite happens
\n\n\n\nHere’s the trick nobody told me early on. When your cat bites, go completely still. Don’t pull your hand away, don’t yell, don’t push them. Just freeze.
\n\n\n\nPulling away triggers their prey drive even more. Going still confuses them they expect a reaction and lose interest. After a few seconds, calmly move your hand away and stand up. Walk away. End the game.
\n\n\n\nIt takes patience, but it works. Didi stopped mid-bite the other day just because I stopped moving. Progress! ?
