Let’s be honest. Cat litter boxes stink. That’s just a fact of life when you share your home with a feline.
But some litters handle odor better than others. Way better.
I’ve gone through probably 15 different types over the years. Clay, crystal, pine, wheat, paper… you name it. Here’s what actually works.
## The contenders
### Clumping Clay Litters
**Dr. Elsey’s Ultra** – This is the gold standard. Clumps hard, controls odor for days, minimal dust. My go-to for a reason.
**Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal** – Also solid. The baking soda helps with odor. Slightly more expensive than Dr. Elsey’s but easier to find in stores.
**Tidy Cats** – It’s everywhere, it’s cheap, it’s… fine. Not amazing, not terrible. The scented versions are too strong for my taste.
### Alternative Litters
**World’s Best Cat Litter (Corn-based)** – Flushable, which is convenient. Odor control is decent but not as good as clay. Some cats don’t like the texture.
**Feline Pine (Pine pellets)** – Cheap and natural. But tracking is a nightmare, and odor control is just okay. Better for people with one cat.
**PrettyLitter (Crystal)** – The trendy one. Changes color to indicate health issues, which is cool. But it’s expensive ($22/month for one cat) and doesn’t clump well.
## What I Actually Use
Dr. Elsey’s Ultra in one box, Arm & Hammer in the other. I have two cats, two boxes. This combo keeps my apartment smelling like… nothing. Which is exactly what you want.
## Tips That Make a Difference
No matter what litter you use:
1. **Scoop daily** – Non-negotiable. Even the best litter can’t work miracles.
2. **Use a covered box** – Helps contain odors and gives your cat privacy.
3. **Replace entirely every 2-3 weeks** – Fresh litter = fresh smell.
4. **Don’t overfill** – 2-3 inches is enough. More is just wasteful.
## Bottom Line
For odor control specifically, Dr. Elsey’s Ultra is hard to beat. It’s not fancy, it’s not “natural,” but it works.
If you’re sensitive to dust, look into low-dust formulas. If you want flushable, go corn-based. But for pure odor-fighting power, clay is still king.
